When a meniscal tear is diagnosed and fails to heal or causes further damage within the knee, arthroscopic surgical treatment becomes necessary.

At arthroscopy it is established whether the tear can be sutured and preserved or whether it is necessary to remove just the torn piece. When necessary to remove, as little as possible of the meniscus must be removed so as to preserve function. The torn part is removed back to a stable margin.
